Rajnath Singh Commissions INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, Boosting Naval Strength

Visakhapatnam: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday commissioned two state-of-the-art multi-mission stealth frigates — INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri — into active service at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the ceremony, Singh hailed the commissioning as a landmark moment for India’s maritime security. “One country has the F-35 that operates in the air, while you’ve delivered a sea-based version of the F-35 — and that too, indigenously,” he remarked, adding that the induction of these warships reflects the nation’s technological strength and strategic resolve.

“The journey that INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri are embarking on today is a journey of India’s pride. With their inclusion, the strength, reach, and resilience of our Navy will be further enhanced,” Singh said.

Advanced Capabilities

Both frigates, built under the Indian Navy’s cutting-edge Project 17A, are equipped with advanced systems and weaponry, including:

  • Long-range surface-to-air missiles

  • BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles

  • Indigenous rocket and torpedo launchers

  • A modern combat management system

  • An advanced fire control system

Singh emphasized that beyond strengthening security, the frigates will play a crucial role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. Notably, this commissioning marks the first time two frontline combatants constructed at different shipyards have been inducted simultaneously.

Push for Atmanirbhar Bharat

Highlighting India’s vision of self-reliance in defence production, Singh declared: “We have now decided that in the future, no ship for the Indian Navy will be built abroad. All ships will be constructed in India itself. This is our firm resolve for Atmanirbharta.”

He underscored India’s track record as a “first responder” in the Indian Ocean Region, citing the Navy’s recent rescue of 18 people — including eight Chinese nationals — after a distress call near Kochi.

India’s Security Outlook

Reiterating India’s commitment to peace, Singh said: “India has never believed in aggressive expansionism, but we will not back down when our security is threatened. A befitting response will always be given.”

He recalled the decisive role of the Armed Forces in Operation Sindoor, underlining that the operation remains ongoing. “Every modern conflict showcases new technology, strategies, or equipment. With wars evolving rapidly, it is essential for us not only to remain updated but to also explore innovative, unexpected solutions,” he noted.

The induction of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri adds significant capability to the Navy’s surface fleet, underscoring India’s determination to safeguard its maritime domain while advancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
