Srinagar, August 2, 2025 — A terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Akhal forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials confirmed on Saturday. The operation, part of an ongoing counter-terror campaign, witnessed heavy exchange of fire through the night.
Preliminary investigations have identified the deceased as Haris Nazir Dar, a suspected local militant from Rajpora in Pulwama district. However, officials stated that a formal identification process is underway.
“Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised so far,” the Indian Army's Chinar Corps said in its update on Operation Akhal.
The encounter followed a cordon-and-search operation launched by joint security forces based on specific intelligence about the presence of militants in the dense forests of Kulgam. According to police sources, the militants opened fire on the troops, triggering a retaliatory response. Additional personnel have since been deployed to fortify the cordon and prevent any possible escape.
Wave of Counter-Terror Operations Across Jammu and Kashmir
The Kulgam encounter is part of a broader crackdown on militant activity across the Union Territory.
In another significant development, security forces foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu’s Poonch district earlier this week. Two terrorists were killed in the Kalsian-Gulpur region of the Degwar sector under Operation Shivshakti, which began late Tuesday night.
“In a successful anti-infiltration operation, alert troops of the Indian Army eliminated two terrorists attempting to cross the LoC,” the Army said in a statement.
Meanwhile, on July 28, under Operation Mahadev, Indian forces neutralised three heavily armed Pakistani terrorists in the Lidwas forest near Harwan on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the Lok Sabha, confirmed that the slain militants were linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. He identified one of the deceased as Suleiman, the chief planner of the attack, along with Afghan and Jibran—senior operatives of the Pakistan-based proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The identification of the trio was corroborated by suspects previously arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who had provided them logistical support and shelter.
