Supreme Court to Deliver Key Verdict on Relocation of Stray Dogs in Delhi-NCR Today

New Delhi, August 22, 2025 — The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict today on the contentious issue of relocating stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR to animal shelters. The matter, which originated as a suo motu case over the growing menace of stray dog attacks, has triggered widespread debate across the country.

A three-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria will pronounce the ruling. Earlier, on August 11, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan had directed the removal of stray dogs from public spaces within eight weeks, citing rising incidents of dog bites leading to rabies and fatalities. The court had also warned of legal action against individuals or organizations attempting to obstruct the implementation of its order.

The directive further instructed the Delhi government to begin immediate action in capturing stray dogs, with strict instructions that they must not be released back onto the streets.

The order, however, sparked a wave of criticism. Animal rights activists expressed concern that the move could result in “inhumane” treatment of the animals. Public reactions poured in from across society, including voices from the film industry, sports, and politics. While some welcomed the decision, many others condemned it.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the August 11 directive as “shortsighted” and “unscientific.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi wrote: “The SC’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. These voiceless souls are not ‘problems’ to be erased.”

Following the nationwide uproar, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai intervened and referred the matter to a three-judge bench, which will now deliver the final word.

The verdict is expected to have significant implications for urban animal management policies, public safety, and the ongoing debate between humane welfare practices and pressing public health concerns.
