Kulgam, August 2: A terrorist was killed during a fierce encounter with security forces in the Akhal forest area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials confirmed on Saturday. The operation remains active as forces continue to search the region.
The joint cordon and search operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. According to a police official, the encounter began after militants opened fire on advancing troops, prompting a calibrated response.
“In response to hostile fire, alert troops engaged in sustained firefight through the night. One terrorist has been neutralised so far," the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps said in an update on Operation Akhal, noting that security forces had tightened the cordon and reinforced their positions.
The latest engagement in Kulgam comes amid heightened anti-terror activities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Successful Infiltration Foiled in Poonch
In a separate encounter earlier this week, two terrorists were gunned down during an infiltration attempt near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu’s Poonch district.
The operation, dubbed Operation Shivshakti, was launched Tuesday night in the Kalsian-Gulpur region of the Degwar sector after army personnel detected movement along the LoC.
“In a successful anti-infiltration operation, alert troops of the Indian Army eliminated two terrorists attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control," the Army said in a statement.
Key LeT Commanders Killed in Srinagar Outskirts
Meanwhile, under Operation Mahadev, Indian forces on July 28 neutralised three senior operatives of the Pakistan-based proscribed outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the Lidwas forest area near Harwan, on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing Parliament, confirmed that the trio had orchestrated the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack which killed 26 people. Among the dead was Suleiman, identified as the chief planner of the attack. The other two, Afghan and Jibran, were also senior LeT operatives. Their identities were verified by suspects arrested earlier by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who had reportedly provided them logistical support.
Continuing Vigil
Security forces remain on high alert across the region, with multiple operations ongoing to dismantle terror infrastructure and thwart infiltration bids. Officials have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and eliminating cross-border threats.
