A 17-year-old girl who died after falling ill at a music festival in Belfast was remembered as bold, honest, and full of life at her funeral in Co Tipperary on Saturday.
Mourners gathered at St Nicholas’ Church in Carrick-on-Suir for the funeral of Mia Keevan, who became unwell at the Emerge festival last weekend and later died in hospital. Many wore bright colours at the request of her family, in celebration of a life remembered for its energy and spirit.
Father Paul Waldron opened the service by acknowledging the shock felt across the community in the wake of her death. Describing Mia as “so young, so full of dreams, so beautifully alive,” he said she was someone who “did not just walk quietly through life – she ran, she danced, she climbed.”
Mia’s sister, Kyah, delivered a heartfelt tribute. She described her sibling as “feisty, loving and full of life,” adding: “She could tell you exactly what you thought, whether you wanted to hear it or not. That honesty was part of her charm. She had a way of making everyone laugh, even when you were annoyed with her.”
Kyah reflected on Mia’s ambitions and her happiness in recent months. “She ran her own race, always on her terms. Over the past couple of months Mia was the happiest she had ever been – she had her car, her boyfriend Jack, and she was so close to her 18th birthday.” She added that her new car, which Mia described as her “absolute pride and joy,” had only recently arrived, with its log book delivered after her death.
Fr Waldron reminded those gathered that behind Mia’s mischievous smile was a determined spirit. “She didn’t just dream, she sprinted after her dreams with everything she had. She didn’t wait for life to come to her; she lived it.” He noted that Mia’s joy at receiving her car – complete with alloy wheels, tinted windows, and a fluffy keyring – reflected her zest for life.
Addressing the young people in attendance, he urged them to care for one another and to think carefully about the choices they make. “That is what Mia’s family want for you,” he said. “She has left behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and love far greater than her 17 years.”
Following the funeral mass, Mia was laid to rest at St Mary’s Cemetery.
