Washington, D.C., Sunday — U.S. President Donald Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept a peace settlement in the ongoing war with Russia, declaring that he has the power to “end the war almost immediately” or allow it to continue.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that Ukraine would not reclaim Crimea—annexed by Russia in 2014—nor be admitted into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a long-standing Russian red line. He referenced Russia’s annexation of Crimea during the Obama administration, recalling that Moscow justified the move after Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was ousted in what the Kremlin viewed as a Western-backed coup. Russia formally completed Crimea’s integration on March 21, 2014.
Trump is scheduled to host Zelenskyy and a delegation of European leaders at the White House on Monday. “Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European leaders at one time. My great honor to host them!!!” he wrote.
The meeting follows Trump’s high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week, after which he claimed “big progress on Russia,” though without elaboration. According to Trump, Putin offered to freeze most front lines if Ukraine ceded all of Donetsk, a proposal Zelenskyy rejected.
On Friday, Trump reiterated his view that Kyiv should make a deal to end the conflict, cautioning that “Russia is a very big power, and they’re not.” His top envoy, Steve Witkoff, said Putin had agreed to allow “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine from the United States as part of any prospective peace agreement. Putin also pledged that Russia would pass legislation enshrining a commitment not to expand into other Ukrainian or European territories.
Initially, Trump indicated he was pressing for an immediate ceasefire in talks with Putin. However, he later aligned with Moscow’s stance that negotiations could proceed without a ceasefire—a position dismissed by several of Ukraine’s European allies.
