Two Indian Army personnel were killed in action during an overnight exchange of fire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, as the ongoing anti-terror operation — Op Akhal — entered its ninth day, the Army reported on Saturday.
Four soldiers sustained injuries in the encounter, of whom two later succumbed. The fallen soldiers were identified as Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, the Chinar Corps confirmed.
“Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, in the line of duty for the Nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us,” the Corps posted on X.
Security officials said the exchange of fire continued in the hilly terrain of Kulgam. “The terrorists are heavily armed and equipped with sophisticated weapons,” they noted.
The encounter began on August 1, when security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the forested Akhal area of south Kashmir, acting on intelligence about the presence of heavily armed militants.
A senior police official stated that all available resources, including drones and helicopters, were being deployed to track and neutralise the terrorists hiding in the forest.
