Volgograd, Russia – A wave of Ukrainian drone strikes carried out overnight has disrupted passenger rail services and triggered a regional power outage in Russia’s Volgograd Region, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, a total of 61 fixed-wing drones were intercepted during the large-scale incursion, with nearly half of them neutralized over the Black Sea and the Voronezh Region. While no casualties were reported, ground damage was recorded in the Volgograd Region, where six drones were brought down.
Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov reported that one of the drones severed a high-voltage power line upon impact, leading to a significant power outage. Another unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed near a railway track but did not detonate, prompting the immediate deployment of bomb disposal units.
As a result, Russian Railways announced delays of up to four hours for several passenger trains. The railway station in Frolovo, approximately 430 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory and 135 kilometers northwest of the city of Volgograd, sustained minor infrastructure damage, Bocharov added.
In addition to rail disruptions, Russia’s federal aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, confirmed temporary suspensions of air traffic in areas surrounding Volgograd and Tambov as a precautionary measure during the attack.
The strikes mark another escalation in Ukraine’s ongoing drone campaign, which officials in Kyiv describe as part of a broader strategy to increase pressure on Moscow and compel an unconditional ceasefire. Russia has firmly rejected such overtures, accusing Ukraine of using ceasefire demands to gain time for frontline regrouping.
Russian authorities reiterated their claim that Ukrainian drones have deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure, while maintaining that Russia’s own operations are focused exclusively on military objectives, including weapons manufacturing sites and fuel depots utilized by Ukrainian forces.
