California – Hollywood superstar and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has drawn controversy over a remark he made about his ex-wife, Maria Shriver. The comment was delivered on Thursday at a Hollywood memorial event honoring veteran broadcast journalist Chris Wallace.
“I’ve known many journalists and have been interviewed by thousands of them,” Schwarzenegger said. “I even married one. The only difference between Chris Wallace and Maria was that Chris didn’t take half of my fortune.”
The quip, directed at his former wife, immediately attracted public attention. Schwarzenegger and Shriver were married for 25 years and have four children together. The couple separated in 2011 following revelations of Schwarzenegger’s extramarital affair with a household staff member, which resulted in the birth of a son, Joseph Baena. Though Schwarzenegger later acknowledged Baena, the scandal ultimately led to divorce proceedings.
During the divorce settlement, Shriver, a former reporter with ABC, was awarded half of Schwarzenegger’s wealth as part of the financial agreement. The legal process extended over a decade, with the divorce finalized in 2021.
Since 2013, Schwarzenegger has been in a long-term relationship with Heather Milligan, a physical therapist, with whom he frequently appears at public events. Maria Shriver, meanwhile, is currently in a relationship with political consultant Matthew Dowd.
