Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the State of Palestine “will never come into existence,” issuing a sharp warning to countries that have recently recognized Palestinian statehood, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
“After the horrific massacre of October 7, those leaders who continue to recognize Palestine are effectively encouraging terrorism,” Netanyahu said. “But let me deliver a clear message: it will never happen. There will be no Palestinian state west of the Jordan River. For years, despite immense domestic and international pressure, I have blocked the establishment of such a terrorist state,” he added. Netanyahu noted that he would formally respond to the recognition moves following his visit to the United States.
The UK, Canada, and Australia officially recognized Palestine as a state earlier this week, while diplomatic sources suggest that France and other Western nations may soon follow suit.
Despite decades of conflict with Israel, Palestine lacks internationally recognized borders, a standing army, or a defined capital. At present, its territory is limited to the West Bank and Gaza. The Palestinian Authority maintains diplomatic missions in several countries, and Palestinian teams compete in international sporting events, including the Olympics. Palestine also holds observer status at the United Nations, though without voting rights.
