Gardaí have reiterated their warning that anyone withholding information about the disappearance of missing schoolboy Kyran Durnin is committing a criminal offence.
The investigation has been complicated by the death of Anthony Maguire, a 36-year-old man who had been arrested in connection with the case but was later released without charge. He was found dead at his home in Drogheda shortly after his release, a development that senior officers say has hampered efforts to establish what happened to the child.
Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern, speaking yesterday at a memorial for murdered Garda Tony Golden in Haggardstown, Co Louth, issued a fresh appeal for cooperation.
“A number of arrests have been made and intrusive searches have been carried out. Our senior investigating officer and his team continue to work tirelessly on this case. But we are again appealing for anyone with information on the disappearance of Kyran Durnin to come forward. It is important to remember that withholding such information may constitute a criminal offence,” he said.
Kyran, who would now be nine years old, was reported missing from his home in Drogheda in August 2022, when he was just six. The case was later upgraded to a murder investigation after Gardaí concluded he had likely been killed. The last confirmed images of him date back to June 2022.
To date, Gardaí have carried out over 570 investigative actions, including extensive searches of three domestic residences and adjoining lands in Drogheda. These searches involved excavation work and full forensic examinations.
Two individuals—a woman in her twenties known to Kyran and Mr Maguire—were previously arrested on suspicion of murder. Both were later released without charge.
Despite these setbacks, investigators believe that several people know the circumstances surrounding Kyran’s disappearance and the location of his remains but are refusing to cooperate. Further searches and arrests are expected as the inquiry continues.
