Hyderabad/Santa Clara: A 30-year-old Indian-origin man from Telangana, Mohammed Nizamuddin, was shot dead by police in Santa Clara, California, earlier this month. His family, residing in Mahabubnagar, was officially informed about the incident on September 18.
According to preliminary reports, the shooting occurred on September 3 following a scuffle between Nizamuddin and his roommate. While the precise circumstances of the incident remain unclear, his family has raised concerns of racial discrimination and is demanding a thorough investigation.
Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, wrote to the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, seeking official intervention. He also appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to expedite the repatriation of his son’s mortal remains to India.
“This morning I came to know he (Nizamuddin) was shot dead by Santa Clara Police and his mortal remains are in a hospital in Santa Clara, California. I do not know the actual reasons why police shot him dead,” Hasnuddin told PTI.
Speaking to ANI, Hasnuddin added that his son had moved to the U.S. in 2016 to pursue higher studies, completing his MS in Florida before working as a software professional. He later relocated to California after securing a promotion.
The incident has also drawn attention in Hyderabad. Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesperson for Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT), shared Hasnuddin’s letter with the media and urged the Ministry of External Affairs to extend immediate support to the grieving family.
Nizamuddin’s father reiterated his request for urgent assistance:
“I appeal to the MEA, Dr. S. Jaishankar, to help bring my son’s body back to India as soon as possible.”
The family awaits further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Nizamuddin’s death, even as diplomatic channels are being approached to facilitate the repatriation.
