New Delhi/Kuala Lumpur:The upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia (October 26–28) is drawing global attention,
with both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend. This raises speculation over a potential in-person meeting between the two leaders, following their phone conversation on September 16, the eve of PM Modi’s 75th birthday.
Top diplomatic sources indicated that PM Modi will not be travelling to New York for the UN General Assembly later this month. While no discussions have yet taken place regarding a bilateral meeting in Malaysia, neither India nor the United States has formally announced Modi and Trump’s participation at the ASEAN Summit.
Nevertheless, Modi has regularly attended ASEAN Summits in the past and is widely expected to maintain that tradition this year. On his part, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that President Trump will travel to Malaysia in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, which will also see the participation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
“President Trump called to inform that he will be visiting Malaysia next month to coincide with the 47th ASEAN Summit,” Anwar stated during the Ambank Group’s 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary Dinner.
If a Trump–Modi meeting materializes in Kuala Lumpur, it could set the stage for deeper coordination ahead of the QUAD Leaders’ Summit in India this November. President Trump is expected to travel to India for the QUAD meeting, having already accepted PM Modi’s invitation during their phone call on June 17.
Sergio Gor, the incoming US Ambassador to India, reaffirmed last week that Trump remains committed to participating in the QUAD Summit and engaging with fellow leaders, though he stopped short of confirming a specific date.
The ASEAN Summit could therefore serve as a crucial prelude to broader strategic dialogues, particularly within the Indo-Pacific framework.
