New Delhi | September 18, 2025 — Days after a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander admitted the extent of damage caused in Bahawalpur during India’s Operation Sindoor, a fresh video of the same commander, Ilyas Kashmiri, has surfaced on social media.
In the clip, Kashmiri alleges that Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, directed senior officers to attend the funerals of JeM operatives killed in the Indian counter-offensive.
According to Kashmiri, General Munir instructed that slain terrorists be honoured with full attendance from senior commanders, alongside heightened security arrangements during the funeral ceremonies.
The video also features Pakistan’s Lt General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who, in a BBC interview, appeared to justify the nation’s military leadership paying respects to the militants. When questioned, Chaudhry asked why Pakistan’s forces would not pay tributes, while insisting that India had not yet provided proof linking JeM to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Earlier, Kashmiri had admitted that the May 7 missile strikes by India on JeM’s Bahawalpur headquarters — launched in retaliation for the Pahalgam massacre — killed multiple members of JeM chief Masood Azhar’s family. Those killed included Azhar’s elder sister and her husband, a nephew and his wife, another niece, five children from his extended family, and several close associates, including his mother.
Following the strikes, senior figures from Pakistan’s military, police, and bureaucracy were reported to have attended the funerals, according to Kashmiri.
Bahawalpur, a long-standing JeM stronghold, gained prominence after Azhar’s release in 1999 in exchange for passengers of the hijacked IC-814 flight. The city has since served as a hub for the group’s operations.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated sharply after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly civilians. India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7 targeted key JeM facilities in Bahawalpur, signalling New Delhi’s resolve to retaliate strongly against cross-border terror.
