Jerusalem/New Delhi: A recent opinion piece published in The Jerusalem Post has drawn sharp comparisons between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of tensions with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel’s response to the August 25 Khan Yunis incident, where an Israeli shell struck Nasser Hospital.
According to the editorial, US–India ties have entered a period of “severe trust crisis,” fueled by disputes over tariffs, India’s ties with Russia, and Washington’s stance on India’s border clashes with Pakistan. The piece highlighted Trump’s repeated criticism of New Delhi’s high import tariffs, his decision to raise U.S. tariffs on India to a cumulative 50%, and his verbal attacks on Modi’s position regarding Russian oil imports. Trump even went so far as to call Russia and India “dead economies” and accused Modi of not caring about “the dead in Ukraine,” remarks that New Delhi regarded as deeply insulting.
In response, the article noted, Modi declined four phone calls from Trump—an act framed not merely as a political decision but as a defense of national honor.
The Jerusalem Post contrasted this with Israel’s immediate response following the Khan Yunis shelling, which killed around 20 people, including journalists. Within hours, the IDF, the chief of staff, and the prime minister all issued statements of apology or regret, promising investigations. According to the piece, these rapid acknowledgements projected “anxiety” and “a message of taking responsibility” that could weaken Israel’s diplomatic and legal standing—especially since later reports suggested that many victims belonged to Hamas.
The editorial argued that Israel’s instinct for transparency may mitigate short-term diplomatic pressure but risks undermining long-term strategic interests. Drawing from Modi’s example, it suggested that “national honor is not a luxury but a strategic asset,” and that states must be cautious about hasty admissions that adversaries may interpret as weakness.
“From India, we learn that national honor is not a luxury but a far-reaching strategic asset,” the opinion concluded, urging Israel to project resilience on the global stage, even under intense international pressure.
