Seoul, September 15 — Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has warned that ongoing joint military exercises by the United States, South Korea, and Japan could bring “negative consequences” for the participating nations, state media reported on Sunday.
The three allies are set to launch their annual “Freedom Edge” drills on September 15, aimed at enhancing aerial, naval, and cyber defense capabilities in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs, according to South Korea’s military.
“This reminds us that the reckless display of power by the U.S., Japan, and South Korea in the wrong places—namely around the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea—will undoubtedly bring about negative consequences for themselves,” Kim said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), using North Korea’s official name.
Separately, South Korean media reported that Seoul and Washington also plan to hold “Iron Mace” tabletop exercises next week, focusing on integrating conventional and nuclear capabilities to deter Pyongyang’s threats.
North Korean military official Pak Jong Chon echoed Kim’s warning, stating that if “hostile forces continue to boast about their power through joint drills, North Korea will take countermeasures more clearly and strongly.”
Pyongyang has long denounced such exercises as rehearsals for invasion, often responding with missile launches or other provocations. Seoul and Washington, however, maintain that the drills are strictly defensive in nature.
