The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formally communicated with Belgium’s Ministry of Justice, providing assurances regarding the conditions under which fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi would be held if extradited to India. Choksi is a principal accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case.
The letter outlines detailed material, medical, and procedural safeguards aimed at addressing human rights concerns raised during extradition proceedings. These assurances, formulated in consultation with the Maharashtra government, are intended to ensure the protection of Choksi’s rights while adhering to international extradition protocols.
Choksi was arrested in Belgium in April following a formal request from Indian authorities. Along with his nephew, Nirav Modi, he is a key accused in the PNB fraud case, which centers on fraudulent transactions amounting to thousands of crores.
Beyond this case, Choksi is also reportedly under investigation in several unrelated bank fraud matters. Following his arrest, his counsel, Vijay Aggarwal, confirmed plans to challenge the court’s denial of bail, citing Choksi’s deteriorating health and ongoing cancer treatment.
