Mumbai on Alert After Bomb Threat Linked to Anant Chaturdashi

Mumbai Police heightened security across the city on Thursday after the Traffic Control Room received a threatening message on its official WhatsApp number, warning of a large-scale terror attack on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi.

According to officials, the sender claimed that multiple vehicles had been rigged with explosives and that “human bombs” had been planted across the city. The message also alleged that 400 kg of RDX would be used and that 14 terrorists had entered Mumbai. The threat was purportedly issued in the name of a Pakistan-based jihadi group calling itself “Lashkar-e-Jihadi.”

In a statement, Mumbai Police confirmed: “Traffic Police in Mumbai received threats over their official WhatsApp number. The message claimed that 34 human bombs had been planted in 34 vehicles across the city, and that blasts would rock Mumbai. It further stated that 14 Pakistani terrorists had entered India and 400 kg of RDX would be used in the attack.”

The Crime Branch, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and other security agencies have been alerted, and investigations are underway to verify the authenticity of the threat. Police said security has been reinforced across Mumbai and Maharashtra.

The latest scare follows a series of similar alerts in recent weeks. On August 29, Patna Civil Court received a bomb threat via email, triggering an emergency response. Security forces, including a bomb disposal squad and dog unit, were deployed to the premises. After a thorough search, no explosives were found. Patna (Central) SP Diksha later stated that the threat appeared to be a hoax.

Earlier the same day, Bihar Police had sounded a high-security alert after intelligence inputs suggested that three terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed had entered the state through Nepal. Photographs and identities of the suspects were circulated to all district police units.

Mumbai has also faced repeated threats in recent months. Recently, the ISKCON temple in the city received a threatening email, prompting a precautionary sweep of the premises by police and bomb disposal teams.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant while assuring that all precautionary measures are being taken.
