PM Modi Chairs Security Panel Meeting Amid Nepal Political Crisis

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the escalating crisis in Nepal, where violent anti-government protests over the past two days have plunged the Himalayan nation into political turmoil.

In a post on X, Modi said the high-level deliberations were held soon after his return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, where he had reviewed flood damage and rehabilitation measures. Describing the violence in Nepal as “heart-rending,” the Prime Minister stressed that India places the highest importance on Nepal’s “stability, peace and prosperity.”

“On my return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security discussed the developments in Nepal. The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” Modi said.

Nepal Plunged Into Unrest

The political crisis in Nepal deepened after Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Poudel resigned on Tuesday, bowing to an unprecedented youth-led uprising.

The protests, spearheaded by students and dominated by the “Gen Z” demographic, erupted over multiple grievances, including a controversial ban on social media and alleged inaction against corruption. The situation escalated on September 8 when clashes between security forces and demonstrators left at least 19 people dead, sparking further outrage.

Despite the government’s late-night decision on Monday to revoke the social media ban, demonstrations intensified on Tuesday, with protesters targeting the residences of senior leaders, the headquarters of major political parties, and even Parliament. Reports of arson and widespread vandalism underscored the depth of public anger against the Oli government.

India, which shares deep historical, cultural and economic ties with Nepal, is closely monitoring the developments, with the CCS expected to continue reviewing the situation.
