Telangana Cyber Crime Police Bust Major Film Piracy Network, Six Arrested

Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Crime Police have dismantled one of the country’s largest film piracy networks, arresting six individuals allegedly involved in illegally copying and distributing films across multiple languages, including Telugu. Authorities estimate that the network caused significant financial losses to the film industry.

The investigation began after a complaint regarding the piracy of the film ‘Hashtag Single’ was lodged with the police. On July 3, officers arrested Kiran, a resident of Vanasthalipuram, who was subsequently questioned about his involvement in the network.

Further investigation revealed that the piracy operation extended internationally, with connections in Dubai, the Netherlands, and Myanmar. Another accused was apprehended for producing and selling illegally recorded content from these locations.

According to police, the network recorded content from theaters and sold it to various websites and OTT platforms, including iBOMMA, circumventing legitimate distribution channels. The criminals reportedly stole satellite content IDs and passwords, enabling them to access and distribute films before their official release.

The operation involved sophisticated methods: agents were provided with hidden recording cameras and trained on how to capture films discreetly in theaters. They were then tasked with booking tickets and recording content, often concealing cameras in shirt pockets, popcorn boxes, and beverage cans. Payments to agents were reportedly made in cryptocurrency, further complicating detection.

Police officials confirmed that this operation represents a major breakthrough in combating organized film piracy in India, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the network.
