Dublin:A man who tragically lost his life following a swimming accident in Dublin last weekend has been named as Paul McSweeney, brother of former RTÉ presenter Flo McSweeney.
Emergency services, including Gardaí and the Coast Guard, were dispatched after reports of a swimmer in difficulty on Sunday, September 14, at around 12:30pm. Paul was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead.
Paul, remembered as a “warm and gentle” man, will repose at Quinn’s of Glasthule on Friday, September 19, from 4pm to 6pm. His funeral service will be held the following morning at 10am in the National Maritime Museum, Dún Laoghaire, followed by cremation at Mount Jerome Crematorium.
Tributes from Friends and Community
Heartfelt tributes have poured in for Paul, described as a devoted family man, a keen sportsman, and a passionate advocate of sustainability.
Members of the Glenageary Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC), where Paul was a long-standing member, expressed their grief in a touching statement:
“It is with deep sadness we learned of the passing of Paul, our friend and valued fellow club member. As a long-time member of Glenageary Lawn Tennis Club, Paul was a regular in a Wednesday evening singles group. We all enjoyed his passion and competitive spirit. His final match point in life came far too early.”
They highlighted his wide range of passions, including sustainability, the green economy, cycling, travel, and languages, but above all, his deep pride in his wife Gemma and their four children—Eleanor, Richard, Hannah, and Grace.
One tribute noted:
“Paul was an intelligent, caring, and genuine man. He will be missed by all in GLTC and particularly by his Wednesday evening playing partners.”
Former colleagues also shared their memories. One business partner wrote:
“For 12 years Paul and I worked together to change the world, and in many ways, we achieved that. He will be sorely missed as a colleague and friend. May he Rest in Peace.”
Others remembered him as a “congenial, warm, and friendly person” whose presence left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Another tribute read:
“Paul’s photo made me smile—it is exactly how I will always remember him: a warm, gentle man. My deepest sympathies to Flo, Brenda, Gemma, and the entire family at this terribly sad time.”
