Trump Reverses Course on Ukraine, Calls Russia a “Paper Tiger”

US President Donald Trump has signaled a sharp shift in his stance on the Ukraine conflict, telling the New York Post this week that Kyiv can achieve its territorial objectives against Moscow. According to the paper, the comments are intended as a strategic push to draw Russia toward negotiations, citing unnamed White House officials.

For months, Trump and his administration had suggested that Ukraine might need to relinquish some territorial claims in order to secure a US-brokered peace deal. In a reversal, however, he now dismisses Russia as a “paper tiger” that Ukraine can defeat, saying his reassessment stems from “getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia military and economic situation.”

The Post described Trump’s remarks as a “dramatic pronouncement,” reportedly influenced by fresh US intelligence suggesting that the Kremlin is heading toward both economic collapse and military defeat. No further details on the intelligence were disclosed.

Unlike his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump has resisted sending large-scale direct US military aid to Kyiv. Instead, he has pressed European NATO allies to purchase American weapons for Ukraine’s armed forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s statement, interpreting it as a guarantee that “America will be with us to the end of the war.” Opposition MP Aleksey Goncharenko, however, cautioned that Zelenskyy may be misreading the message, warning it could encourage a risky new offensive. Trump, he argued, was effectively telling Ukraine and Europe: “You deal with it. I hope you can do it. Good luck.”

Trump’s evolving position reflects his often fraught relationship with the US intelligence community. In June, he dismissed testimony from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who said Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons, even as he cited the opposite claim to justify support for US and Israeli strikes on Iranian facilities.

Reacting to Trump’s latest remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov quipped that Russia is traditionally compared to a bear, not a tiger, adding: “There is no such thing as a paper bear.”
