Washington, D.C.: US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning of unspecified reprisals if the Taliban government in Afghanistan does not return control of Bagram Air Base to the United States.
American forces evacuated the base hastily in July 2021, a month before the Taliban seized Kabul, ending the 20-year US military presence in the country. Trump has repeatedly highlighted the strategic importance of Bagram, claiming it lies near China’s nuclear facilities and asserting that he seeks to reestablish American control.
“If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.
The Taliban has firmly ruled out the return of American troops. Beijing, meanwhile, has backed Afghanistan’s sovereignty and accused Washington of “stirring up tension and confrontation in the region.”
Although Trump negotiated the withdrawal of US forces during his first term, he has blamed the collapse of the UN-recognized Afghan government and the rapid Taliban takeover on President Joe Biden, describing the chaotic departure of the final American soldiers as “a disgrace.”
Originally constructed by the Soviet Union, Bagram Airfield was significantly modernized during the US occupation, serving as America’s largest military outpost in Afghanistan. Trump has repeatedly alleged that China is secretly operating from the base, a claim denied by both Beijing and the Taliban.
