Islamabad/Kabul, Oct. 12 — At least 18 Pakistani Army soldiers were killed, while several others reportedly surrendered or were captured, as intense overnight clashes broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on Sunday. The confrontation marked one of the deadliest escalations between the two sides in recent months.
According to regional sources, Afghan forces launched retaliatory attacks in response to Pakistan’s air raid on Kabul earlier this week, which Islamabad said was aimed at targeting a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant leader. Kabul, however, denounced the strike as a violation of its sovereignty, vowing a firm military response.
The renewed violence has once again underscored the fragility of the 2,640-kilometre-long Durand Line, the disputed border that separates Afghanistan and Pakistan. Stretching through the mountainous terrain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the frontier has long been a flashpoint for cross-border militant activity and strained diplomatic ties.
Security analysts warn that the latest escalation could deepen the mistrust between Islamabad and the Taliban government in Kabul, further complicating regional stability and counterterrorism cooperation.
