Bali, October 3, 2025: A tragic case from Bali has once again raised concerns over the dangers of extreme dieting. A 27-year-old Polish woman, identified as Karolina Krzyzak, was found dead in her villa at the Sumberkima Hill resort after reportedly following a strict fruitarian diet that left her gravely malnourished.
According to The Sun, Karolina checked into the resort in December 2024 and requested a villa with a pool. Staff members were alarmed immediately upon her arrival, describing her as “emaciated,” with sunken eyes and protruding collarbones. Her condition was so fragile that on one occasion, she had to be escorted back to her room by a night clerk, as she was unable to walk there on her own.
Visible Decline in Health
Her declining health was apparent. Reports noted that her fingernails had turned yellow, her teeth had begun to decay, and her body showed clear signs of nutrient deficiency. Despite repeated pleas from resort staff to seek medical attention, Karolina consistently refused.
Three days into her stay, hotel workers grew alarmed when a local friend of hers informed them she had not been in contact. Upon entering her villa, staff found Karolina unresponsive. She was later declared dead, with the cause attributed to severe malnutrition.
Medical Condition and Background
At the time of her death, Karolina reportedly weighed just 22 kilograms. She was suffering from osteoporosis and albumin deficiency, both linked to long-term malnutrition.
Friends revealed that Karolina had long battled body image issues and experienced anorexia during her teenage years. While studying in the UK, she developed an interest in yoga and veganism, which eventually led her to embrace fruitarianism—a highly restrictive diet consisting almost entirely of raw fruits.
Her social media presence also reflected her worsening condition. Despite repeated interventions by her parents and close friends urging her to seek medical help, Karolina refused to abandon her extreme dietary practices.
The Risks of Fruitarianism
Health experts have frequently warned against fruitarianism, noting that while fruits provide important vitamins and fiber, the diet lacks essential proteins, fats, and minerals necessary for survival. Prolonged adherence can lead to muscle wastage, weakened immunity, and organ failure.
Karolina’s tragic death now stands as a stark reminder of the life-threatening risks associated with extreme diets taken to the extreme.
