Mumbai: The inauguration of Cyber Awareness Month – October 2025 was held at the office of the Director General of Police on Friday, October 3. The initiative, dedicated to raising public awareness on the escalating threats of cybercrime, witnessed the participation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior police officials, and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar.
One of the most compelling moments of the event came when Akshay Kumar recounted a troubling real-life experience involving his teenage daughter, Nitara. Sharing the incident, Kumar explained that while playing an online video game a few months ago, his daughter came across an unknown individual who initially sent polite and encouraging messages.
“The game allowed her to connect with strangers. At first, the person’s tone was friendly, with comments like ‘thank you,’ ‘well played,’ and ‘fantastic.’ It appeared harmless. But after learning she was female, the nature of the conversation shifted,” Kumar revealed.
The actor disclosed that the individual then made an explicit request, asking his daughter to share nude photographs. “My daughter immediately exited the game and informed my wife. Fortunately, she did not hesitate to speak up about what happened, and that was the most important part,” he said.
Kumar emphasized that such incidents are not isolated, but part of a broader pattern in which predators establish trust before attempting to exploit minors—sometimes leading to extortion or even driving victims towards extreme steps such as suicide.
The month-long awareness campaign will focus on educating citizens—particularly children, parents, and schools—about safe digital practices, online responsibility, and methods to safeguard against cyber threats. In his address, Chief Minister Fadnavis underscored the urgent need for heightened vigilance in today’s digital era.
