Navi Mumbai, October 30: The Indian women’s cricket team etched its name into the record books at DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, pulling off the largest successful run chase in the history of women’s international cricket to storm into the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.
Chasing a daunting target of 339 runs set by defending champions Australia, India completed the chase in 48.3 overs with five wickets in hand, thanks to a sublime unbeaten century from Jemimah Rodrigues. The Mumbai batter anchored the innings with a masterful 127 off 115 deliveries*, guiding India to a historic win in front of a jubilant home crowd.
Australia, having won the toss and elected to bat, posted an imposing 338 all out in 49.5 overs, powered by Phoebe Litchfield’s elegant century and crucial half-centuries from Ashleigh Gardner and Ellyse Perry.
Litchfield and captain Alyssa Healy opened the innings, but Healy fell early to Kranti Goud for just 5 runs. Perry then joined Litchfield in a commanding 155-run stand for the second wicket. Litchfield’s fluent stroke play earned her a well-deserved hundred before she was dismissed by Amanjot Kaur, while Perry contributed a composed 77 runs before falling to Radha Yadav.
Gardner’s enterprising 63, along with useful cameos from Beth Mooney (24) and Annabel Sutherland (20), pushed the total to 338, despite late breakthroughs from India’s bowlers.
In response, India had a shaky start as Shafali Varma (10) and Smriti Mandhana (24) departed early to Kim Garth. However, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (89) and Rodrigues steadied the innings with a magnificent 167-run partnership for the third wicket, reviving India’s chase with a mix of aggression and composure.
After Harmanpreet’s dismissal by Sutherland, Rodrigues took charge, displaying maturity beyond her years. She remained unbeaten, steering India home with contributions from Richa Ghosh (26) and *Amanjot Kaur (15)**.
This monumental victory not only sealed India’s place in the final but also marked a defining moment in women’s cricket — showcasing resilience, belief, and the rise of a new era in Indian women’s sport.
