Air India Flight Lands Safely in Birmingham After Technical Alert; Aircraft Grounded for Checks

New Delhi / Birmingham, October 5:An Air India flight from Amritsar to Birmingham landed safely on Saturday after its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) deployed during the aircraft’s final approach to the UK city.

In an official statement issued by the airline, Air India confirmed that flight AI117 experienced the deployment of its RAT shortly before landing. Despite the unexpected event, all electrical and hydraulic systems were later found to be functioning normally, and the aircraft touched down safely at Birmingham Airport.

“On 4 October 2025, Air India flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham experienced deployment of its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) during final approach. All electrical and hydraulic systems were normal, and the aircraft landed safely,” the airline said.

Following standard safety protocol, the aircraft was grounded for technical inspection, which led to the cancellation of the return flight AI114 from Birmingham to New Delhi. Air India added that alternative arrangements were being made for affected passengers.

What Is a Ram Air Turbine (RAT)?

The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small, fold-out windmill-like device that deploys automatically when an aircraft experiences a total or partial loss of electrical or hydraulic power — typically due to an engine or generator failure.

When deployed, the RAT harnesses airflow from the moving aircraft to generate emergency power, allowing pilots to maintain control of key flight instruments, hydraulic systems, and essential electrical components. The system is a crucial backup mechanism designed to ensure safe operation in rare power-loss situations.

Aviation experts emphasize that RAT deployment does not always indicate a critical emergency but serves as a safety redundancy feature that allows flight crews to maintain control until the aircraft lands.

Recent Air India Express Incident

In a separate incident in September 2025, an Air India Express passenger on a flight from Bengaluru to Varanasi allegedly attempted to open the cockpit door mid-flight, reportedly while searching for the lavatory.

The individual was restrained by the cabin crew and handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) upon landing.

A spokesperson for Air India Express confirmed the incident, stating:

“We are aware of reports regarding a passenger approaching the cockpit area while looking for the lavatory. Our robust safety and security protocols were not compromised, and the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities.”

Safety Measures and Operational Review

Air India reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority and that the airline continues to adhere to the highest operational and maintenance standards.

The grounded aircraft in Birmingham will remain under inspection until the airline’s engineering and safety teams complete all required technical checks.
