New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has joined hands with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, paving the way for the first complete passenger aircraft to be built in India.
The SJ-100, a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft that can be used for domestic and short-haul flights, will be built. This will be a game-changer, HAL said in a statement after signing the MoU.
As per the MoU, HAL will have the rights to manufacture the aircraft for domestic customers. Currently , more than 200 SJ-100 aircraft have been manufactured and are in service with more than 16 airline operators. HAL claims that this will be a breakthrough for the central government's UDAN project in India. 'This will also be the first time that a complete passenger aircraft will be manufactured in India.'
The aviation sector will require more than 200 such narrow-body jets for domestic travel in the next ten years. "This is a step towards realising the dream of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' in the civil aviation sector," HAL added in a statement.
According to details on the United Aircraft Corporation website, the SJ-100 aircraft can accommodate up to 103 passengers and can fly up to 3,530 kilometers. Notable features of the aircraft include low operating costs and the ability to operate in all weather zones with temperatures ranging from minus 55 degrees to plus 45 degrees.
