Ireland to Host Its First International Tug-of-War Championship in Dublin on October 25

DUBLIN, Oct. 10 — Ireland is gearing up to host its first-ever International Tug-of-War Championship, a thrilling global sporting spectacle organized by the Irish Indian Movement for Sports (TIIMS – Tug of War Ireland India Malayali Segment). The much-anticipated event will take place on October 25 at the National Basketball Indoor Arena, Dublin, transforming the venue into a battleground of strength, teamwork, and endurance.

As autumn’s chill descends on Ireland, the arena will ignite with the heat of competition — bringing together Ireland’s finest tug-of-war teams and over ten international squads from around the world. This historic event marks a major milestone for Ireland, blending traditional sport with international camaraderie in a festival-like celebration.

Leading the challenge will be the North American champions, arriving under the leadership of Jomon Thodukun, competing on Irish soil for the very first time. They will face formidable opponents from Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Malta, Germany, and several other European nations, all vying for glory in what promises to be Europe’s grandest tug-of-war showdown to date.

The competition offers €4,000 in first prize money, sponsored by Areva Furniture, along with a prestigious gold trophy. The second prize of €2,000 is sponsored by Pink Salt Indian Restaurant, while the third prize (€1,000) is contributed by Blinds Gallery. The fourth prize (€500) comes courtesy of Finance Solutions, and teams ranked fifth to eighth will each receive €100 in recognition of their performance.

Organizers have gone to great lengths to make the event a complete family festival, featuring a blend of sports, cultural performances, and entertainment programs throughout the day. Spectators can also enjoy special professional tug-of-war exhibition matches by Ireland’s top teams, showcasing the nation’s traditional sporting spirit at its best.

Tug-of-war, one of humanity’s oldest and most universal contests of strength, has deep roots across cultures — from village fairs in Asia to Highland gatherings in Europe. In Ireland, the sport carries a proud legacy, symbolizing unity, teamwork, and friendly rivalry. By hosting this international championship, IIMS aims to revive and celebrate this ancient sport while fostering friendship among global communities.

“This is more than a competition; it’s a festival of teamwork and tradition,” said an IIMS spokesperson. “We are thrilled to host the world on Irish soil and create memories that will last a lifetime.”

Event organizers have expressed confidence that the 2025 International Tug-of-War Championship will not only mark a sporting milestone but also serve as a cultural bridge — uniting athletes, families, and enthusiasts in a celebration of strength, spirit, and solidarity.
