Kalyan, Maharashtra – October 1: A private school in Maharashtra has come under scrutiny after parents alleged that children were prohibited from wearing traditional symbols such as tilak, bindi, bangles, rakhi, and sacred threads within the institution. The controversy has prompted the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) to issue a formal notice seeking clarification from the school administration.
Allegations by Parents
The issue surfaced when several parents reported that their children were allegedly asked to remove tilak and other cultural adornments upon entering the school premises. Some parents further claimed that tilak marks were forcefully wiped off and that students were threatened with punishment for wearing such symbols. A few also alleged that children faced physical reprimand in connection with the matter.
Civic Body Responds
Acting on the complaints, concerned parents approached local representatives, who escalated the matter to KDMC’s education department. On September 30, the civic body issued a formal notice to the school, asking for a detailed explanation regarding the alleged restrictions and disciplinary actions.
A KDMC official confirmed:
“The department acted immediately after receiving the complaints. We are confident the matter will be resolved amicably. There is no need for unnecessary escalation, and dialogue between parents and the school management will ensure a balanced solution.”
School Denies Ban Allegations
In its response, the school management denied issuing any directive against tilak or other symbols. The administration emphasized that its priority is the safety and harmony of students, parents, and teachers, and dismissed reports of a so-called “fatwa” as unfounded.
Political and Community Reactions
The controversy has also drawn the attention of local political workers, who pressed KDMC to take immediate action. While the civic body has assured parents that their grievances are being addressed, it has also stressed the importance of maintaining normal academic activities without disruption.
Matter Under Review
KDMC has stated that it will carefully review the school’s official explanation before determining further action. Meanwhile, parents and civic authorities remain closely engaged, awaiting clarity on the institution’s stance.
The issue continues to resonate within the local community, highlighting the sensitive balance between school regulations, cultural practices, and parental concerns.
