Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s remarks in the Assembly on Wednesday, ridiculing the short stature of an Opposition MLA allegedly involved in a scuffle with watch and ward staff, have sparked sharp criticism from Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who described the comments as an instance of “body shaming.”
The controversy unfolded after the Opposition boycotted Assembly proceedings over the alleged disappearance of gold from the dwarapalaka idols at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa Temple. The situation escalated when a heated exchange and a brief scuffle broke out between Opposition members and the watch and ward staff, including women personnel.
In his remarks following the disruption, Chief Minister Vijayan mocked the conduct of an Opposition MLA—without naming him—using colloquial expressions to make fun of his height. He suggested that the legislator’s aggressive behaviour stemmed not from personal strength but from the protection his position as an MLA afforded him.
Reacting strongly, Satheesan condemned the Chief Minister’s comments, calling them “politically incorrect and unbecoming of the leader of a state.” He added, “Such remarks amount to body shaming—something reminiscent of 19th-century Spain, not modern Kerala.”
The Kerala Assembly has been witnessing continuous uproar and Opposition protests in recent days over the Sabarimala gold-plating controversy, with both sides trading barbs over accountability and transparency in the matter.
