Bharatpur, Rajasthan – October 3, 2025:In a tragic case that has raised fresh concerns over the safety of cough syrups, a two-year-old child from Bharatpur has died after allegedly consuming the medicine. The infant, identified as Tirthraj, is the third child in Rajasthan reported to have died under similar circumstances.
According to the family, the child was admitted to the Sub-District Hospital in Weir on September 23, where he was administered a cough syrup. His condition worsened soon after, prompting a transfer to Jaipur in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed on September 27.
Probe Report Submitted to CM Bhajanlal Sharma
A probe report has since been submitted to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma regarding the deaths linked to cough syrup consumption. The inquiry, conducted by the state’s Medical Department, ruled out medical negligence, clarifying that no doctor had prescribed the medicine in question.
Investigators revealed that the affected children were given a dextromethorphan-based syrup that families had kept at home. Authorities believe the fatalities may have resulted from unsafe self-medication rather than doctor-supervised treatment.
The findings highlight the risks of over-the-counter misuse of cough syrups and reinforce the need for public awareness on the dangers of administering such medicines without professional guidance.
