SIT Files Chargesheet Against Rapper Vedan in Rape Case; Separate Charges Filed in Narcotics Case

 Kochi: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed a chargesheet against rapper Vedan in connection with a rape case, officials said. Investigators concluded that Vedan had allegedly assaulted a young doctor on multiple occasions under the pretext of marriage. Evidence of financial fraud was also cited in the chargesheet.

The case was initially registered by Thrikkakara Police on July 31, based on the doctor’s complaint. The survivor alleged that Vedan raped her five times between 2021 and 2023, in addition to misappropriating ₹30,000 from her. Vedan had earlier secured anticipatory bail in the case.

Meanwhile, a separate chargesheet was also filed on Tuesday in a narcotics case against the rapper. The Thirppunithura Judicial First Class Magistrate Court received the chargesheet, which came after a five-month gap in the investigation.

According to the charges, Vedan had consumed cannabis. The case lists nine accused, including Vedan. During raids on his apartment, police seized 6 grams of cannabis, ₹9.5 lakh in cash, mobile phones, a weighing scale, rolling papers, and a crusher allegedly used for preparing the substance. The contraband was seized on April 28 by Hill Palace Police and the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF). Vedan reportedly told investigators that the cannabis was used as part of preparations for a music programme, claiming he was not a habitual user.

At the same time, Vedan’s family has alleged a conspiracy behind the repeated cases against him. They submitted complaints to the police and even to the Chief Minister, with his brother Haridas asserting that the sexual assault allegations were part of a deliberate plot to malign the rapper.
