Kilkenny: Gardaí have arrested three people in connection with a series of dangerous driving incidents that took place in County Kilkenny over the weekend.
The events unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, when Gardaí were alerted to reports of a car driving erratically and being involved in a road traffic collision causing material damage on the Old Dublin Road in Lyrath, Kilkenny City.
According to Garda reports, the vehicle then entered Maudlin Street from the wrong direction, prompting members of the public to intervene and attempt to flag it down.
A man and a woman, both in their 30s, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the scene before being taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for further medical care.
With the assistance of bystanders, Gardaí arrested two men (both in their 30s) and a woman in her 20s at the scene. The three suspects are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in Kilkenny. The vehicle involved has also been seized under the Road Traffic Act.
Appeal for Witnesses and CCTV Footage
Investigations into the incidents remain ongoing. Gardaí have issued a public appeal for witnesses and any available video footage.
A Garda spokesperson said:
“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a number of incidents that occurred in Kilkenny City on Saturday, 4 October 2025. Anyone who was on the Old Dublin Road or Maudlin Street between 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. and who may have video footage, including dash-cam recordings, is asked to make it available to Gardaí.”
Homeowners on Maudlin Street who may have domestic CCTV footage are also being urged to assist investigators.
Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station at 056 777 5000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any local Garda station.
Gardaí Commend Bystanders for Quick Response
In a statement shared via the An Garda Síochána Kilkenny Facebook page on Sunday, Gardaí praised the swift and courageous actions of members of the public who intervened during the incident.
“The quick response of numerous motorists to a serious hazard helped avoid head-on and potentially fatal collisions,” the spokesperson said.
“Ordinary people did what they could to stop reckless behaviour that endangered the safety of everyone on the road.”
Investigations are continuing, and Gardaí have thanked the public for their cooperation and vigilance in assisting with the case.
