Darjeeling, October 5: Relentless heavy rain has wreaked havoc across North Bengal, claiming at least three lives — including that of a child — following multiple landslides in Mirik and Sukhiya, Darjeeling district.
Two of the fatalities were reported from the Jasbir Basti area of Mirik after a major landslide swept through the region. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue amid challenging weather and treacherous terrain. The Darjeeling District Police are leading the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the affected zones.
Widespread Flooding and Damage
Visuals from Jalpaiguri reveal scenes of devastation — houses submerged, roads inundated, and residents wading through waist-deep water. In Kalimpong, continuous downpours have worsened the crisis, triggering fresh landslides and isolating several areas. Key communication lines remain down, further hampering relief efforts.
A major landslide on National Highway 717E, the alternative route connecting Siliguri and Sikkim, has brought traffic to a standstill. The incident occurred between Pedong and Rishikhola, blocking this vital link via Rhenock. Officials said the persistent rainfall has severely hindered road clearance operations.
Bridge Collapse in Dudhia
In another blow to connectivity, the iron bridge over the Balason River at Dudhia — linking Siliguri and Mirik — collapsed overnight due to the incessant rain. Vehicular movement along the route has been completely suspended. Police personnel from the Garidhura outpost are on-site, monitoring the rising water levels and assisting residents in vulnerable areas.
Weather Warnings in Place
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar, forecasting more heavy rainfall. A red alert is in effect for Alipurduar, while a yellow alert has been issued for North and South Dinajpur and Malda districts.
The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious, advising against taking shelter under trees or electric poles and to avoid contact with water bodies during thunderstorms.
As rescue teams battle severe weather conditions, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further loss of life and property.
