Washington: Amid escalating violence between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that it would be “very easy” for him to end the ongoing conflict. His remarks followed Pakistan’s recent airstrikes on Afghan territory, which have intensified regional tensions.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday (local time), President Trump stated, “I have to run America, but I like to end wars. Stopping this one would be very easy for me.” He added that his efforts to end several global conflicts in the past have “saved millions of lives.”
Trump’s comments came shortly after Pakistan launched airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Paktika province late Friday evening. The attacks reportedly targeted Taliban positions, leaving at least 17 people dead, including eight local cricketers returning home after a match, according to Afghan media reports.
Pakistan–Afghanistan Border Tensions Escalate
The strikes occurred just hours after both sides had agreed to extend a 48-hour ceasefire pending the outcome of peace talks in Doha. Despite the truce extension, cross-border hostilities flared again, further complicating the fragile dialogue process.
Afghan officials confirmed that a high-level Pakistani delegation has arrived in Doha for discussions, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, National Security Adviser, and ISI Chief Asim Malik. The talks, described as “a quest for peace,” aim to prevent a wider regional conflict that could destabilize the border areas.
Reference to India–Pakistan Conflict
During his remarks, President Trump also recalled his earlier intervention in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan, claiming that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif personally thanked him for preventing a war that “could have claimed millions of lives.”
As Pakistan and the Taliban prepare for another round of peace talks, President Trump’s statement has once again placed Washington’s diplomatic influence at the center of South Asia’s evolving security narrative.
