Louisville, November 5: A UPS cargo jet burst into flames and crashed moments after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, killing at least seven people, according to preliminary reports.
Dramatic video footage circulating online captured the terrifying sequence of events. In one clip, believed to have been recorded by airport employees, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft is seen engulfed in flames as it accelerates down the runway. Seconds later, a massive fireball erupts at the runway’s end, followed by thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky — consistent with eyewitness accounts of an explosion near or shortly after liftoff. 🚨BREAKING: UPS cargo plane Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, crashes shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky. Additional videos filmed by bystanders appear to show the aircraft crashing through and destroying several structures near the airport, though authorities have yet to confirm the extent of ground damage.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that UPS Flight 2976 went down at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time, shortly after departing from Louisville en route to Honolulu. Emergency services rushed to the scene, which officials described as an “active site with fire and debris.”
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken charge of the investigation and is working alongside FAA officials to determine the cause of the crash. Both agencies have cautioned that all currently available information is preliminary and that the authenticity of circulating videos has not yet been independently verified.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area while recovery and investigation efforts continue.
