Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Sunday, outlined a series of forward-looking initiatives aimed at reshaping global development through the lens of India’s civilisational ethos.
Speaking at the session titled “Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth: Leaving No One Behind,” the Prime Minister urged world leaders to fundamentally reassess existing development parameters. He noted that while the G20 has historically influenced global finance and growth models, many of these frameworks have resulted in unequal resource distribution and the over-exploitation of nature—issues felt most sharply across Africa.
“With Africa hosting the G20 Summit for the first time, now is the right moment to revisit our development parameters and focus on growth that is both inclusive and sustainable. India’s civilisational values—particularly the principle of Integral Humanism—offer a constructive way forward,” PM Modi stated.
G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug Terror Nexus
Drawing attention to the alarming rise of synthetic narcotics such as fentanyl, the Prime Minister highlighted their growing threat to public health, social stability, and global security. He proposed the establishment of a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug Terror-Nexus, designed to integrate financial, governance, and security mechanisms to dismantle trafficking networks and choke off illicit financial flows.
“This initiative will help disrupt the drug–terror economy, which continues to fuel extremism
Proposal for a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository
Emphasising the value of time-tested ecological and cultural practices preserved by communities around the world, PM Modi suggested the creation of a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository under the G20 framework.
He stated that India’s rich heritage in sustainable living can contribute meaningfully to such a global initiative.
“This repository will help preserve and share traditional wisdom that supports good health, ecological balance, and long-term well-being,” he added.
G20 Global Healthcare Response Team
To enhance global preparedness for public health emergencies and natural disasters, the Prime Minister also proposed the formation of a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team.
The initiative aims to establish highly trained medical units across G20 nations, ready for rapid deployment during crises.
G20–Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative
Reaffirming India’s commitment to Africa’s development, PM Modi advanced the proposal for a G20–Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative. Based on a “train-the-trainer” model, the programme envisions the creation of one million certified trainers across Africa over the next decade. Supported collectively by G20 partners, these trainers will help upskill millions of young Africans across diverse sectors.
