Jakarta, November 7 — At least 54 people were injured in an explosion that occurred during Friday prayers at a mosque located inside a school complex in North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading area, according to Reuters.
City Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri, speaking at a televised press conference, confirmed that authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the blast. “The initial data we have received indicates that there are approximately 54 individuals affected. Some have minor injuries, some moderate, and some have already been discharged,” he said.
Preliminary investigations revealed the recovery of several items at the scene — including a body vest, firearms, and materials possibly used to make explosives — suggesting a potential link to terrorist activity. However, police have urged the public not to speculate until the investigation is complete.
Images from the site showed limited structural damage to the mosque, but several worshippers sustained burns and lacerations from shattered glass. The explosion reportedly originated near the mosque’s loudspeaker system, according to the Associated Press.
An anti-bomb squad deployed to the scene also discovered toy rifles and a toy gun, further complicating the investigation. “Police are still examining the scene to determine the exact cause of the blast,” Suheri stated, adding, “Let the authorities work first — we will convey the results to the public once verified.”
Authorities have cordoned off the area and are conducting a detailed forensic assessment. Help desks have been established at two nearby hospitals — Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital and Yarsi Hospital — to assist relatives in locating injured victims.
While the motive and cause remain under investigation, officials have emphasized that all possible angles, including accidental detonation or deliberate sabotage, are being explored.
