A proposed event titled the Tales of Kamasutra Festival, scheduled to be held in Goa during Christmas, has sparked a major controversy, with several organisations alleging that the festival was an attempt to promote sex tourism in the state.
Following widespread opposition and public outcry, the Goa Police swiftly intervened and directed the organisers to cancel the event. The police also ordered the removal of all promotional content from social media.
In an official statement posted on X, the Goa Police said, “We have promptly taken cognisance of this matter and have directed the organisers to not proceed with the event. They have also been instructed to take down all advertisements from social media. Additionally, police stations have been directed to maintain strict vigilance over upcoming events in their jurisdiction.”
The event, titled Tales, was planned from December 25 to 28 and was reportedly linked to the Osho Foundation. It was convened by Swami Dhyan Sumit of the Osho-Ludhiana Meditation Society. The proposed festival claimed to showcase Kamasutra narratives alongside meditation and wellness sessions.
However, several organisations strongly objected to the event’s timing and its association with Christmas, arguing that such programming was inappropriate during a religious festival. Concerns intensified after allegations that the event could encourage sex tourism in Goa.
The controversy gained traction after the founder of the NGO ARZ (Anyay Rahit Zindagi) lodged a formal complaint, prompting immediate action from the authorities. The event had also been promoted under the name of the Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh Foundation, although the specific venue was not disclosed in the promotional material.
In addition to NGOs, political groups also voiced their disapproval. The Santa Cruz unit of the North Goa Congress criticised the festival, stating that it undermined the sanctity of Christmas.
With the cancellation now confirmed, Goa Police have issued strict instructions to all police stations to monitor upcoming events closely to prevent similar incidents.
