Dublin, November 5: The mystery surrounding reports of a “lion” roaming through Irish woodlands has been resolved after Gardaí confirmed that the supposed wild animal was, in fact, a dog.
The unusual scare began last week when a video widely circulated on social media and WhatsApp appeared to show a lion-like creature entering a wooded area. The sighting was initially reported near Mountshannon in County Clare, though some social media users also speculated that it might have occurred near Kells, County Meath.
After investigating the incident, Gardaí from Killaloe determined that the animal in question was a Newfoundland dog named Mouse. In a lighthearted statement issued on Tuesday, Gardaí said the dog “was delighted with his recent viral video clip.”
Mouse’s distinctive appearance — featuring a trimmed coat, a tuft left at the end of the tail, and a mane-like ring of fur around the head and neck — had contributed to the confusion, making the gentle giant look strikingly similar to a lion at first glance.
The incident, though brief, generated considerable amusement online, with many users expressing relief that the “Irish lion” was simply a friendly neighbourhood pet enjoying his walk in the woods.
