Colombo: Sri Lanka is facing widespread criticism after a New Zealand tourist released a video detailing an incident of sexual harassment she experienced while travelling in the country. The revelation has ignited public debate over the safety of foreign travellers and raised concerns about the nation’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.
According to the woman’s account, she was travelling from Arugam Bay to Passikudah in a tuk-tuk–type vehicle when she noticed a man on a scooter following her. Initially dismissing his presence, she continued her journey. However, during a brief stop, the man approached her again.
How the Incident Unfolded
The man allegedly parked his scooter, approached her in a seemingly friendly manner, and began casual conversation. But the tone quickly shifted. After making a sexually suggestive remark, he reportedly exposed himself to the young woman.

Shocked and disgusted, she immediately restarted her vehicle and fled the scene. In her video, the tourist said the experience left her deeply shaken and emotionally distressed, affecting the remainder of her trip.
Growing Concerns About Tourist Safety
The incident has prompted renewed calls for stronger protective measures for tourists. Critics argue that Sri Lankan authorities must intensify efforts to prevent harassment and ensure the safety of visitors, particularly in popular coastal and backpacker destinations.
As the video circulates widely online, the government is under increasing pressure to respond decisively and restore confidence in the country’s tourism sector.
