New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has strongly criticised party MP Shashi Tharoor for publicly praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of hypocrisy and questioning his continued presence in the Congress Party. Dikshit said Tharoor’s remarks were inconsistent with the party’s official stance and raised serious doubts about his political loyalty.
“I do not think Shashi Tharoor understands the policies of this country well enough,” Dikshit said. “If you believe that someone who stands against Congress’s fundamental policies is doing good for the nation, then you should pursue that politics. Why remain in the Congress? Just because you are an MP?” he asked, calling Tharoor a “hypocrite” for commending policies that the Congress fundamentally opposes.
Dikshit further argued that if Tharoor genuinely believed the BJP’s and the Prime Minister’s policies were better than those of his own party, he should explain his reasoning. “Otherwise, you are simply a hypocrite,” he added.
Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate Also Questions Tharoor
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate also criticised Tharoor, stating that she found “nothing worthy of praise” in the Prime Minister’s speech and was baffled as to how Tharoor had identified anything commendable in it.
The controversy erupted after Tharoor shared his impressions on X, noting his attendance at the Ramnath Goenka Memorial event where Prime Minister Modi delivered an address. Tharoor wrote that he had been invited to the private function in Delhi and that the Prime Minister spoke passionately about accelerating national development. He also mentioned Modi’s comments on the need to move beyond a “post-colonial mindset.”
Strained Ties With Congress Not New
This is not the first time Shashi Tharoor has spoken favourably about the Prime Minister. His relationship with the Congress leadership has been strained in recent months, particularly after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Following the incident, Tharoor’s nomination as part of a government delegation of opposition representatives to visit friendly nations reportedly deepened internal tensions.
Leading the delegation to the United States and four other countries, Tharoor subsequently fuelled fresh speculation about a possible party switch through several public statements and engagements that contrasted with the Congress’s official narrative.
