Patna: A political storm has erupted in Bihar’s Samastipur district after reports surfaced that CCTV cameras inside the strong room were switched off — just days after bundles of WPAT slips were found dumped in the open. The incident has sparked sharp reactions from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which has accused election officials of deliberate misconduct.
According to an official statement issued by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar, the district magistrate has been directed to visit the site immediately and conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the RJD alleged that “CCTV cameras inside the Samastipur strong room remained off for 30 minutes.” The party launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission and local administration, saying:
“The Election Commission and district officials should stop citing absurd excuses such as power cuts, battery failure, TV in sleep mode, or lack of a generator. Your credibility and integrity are zero. Stop these tactics to steal votes!”
In another post, the RJD claimed that “suspicious individuals” were seen entering the strong room of the Mohiuddin Nagar Assembly constituency in Samastipur. The party demanded that the Election Commission and the Bihar CEO clarify who these individuals were and why they were allowed inside the secured area.
“Stay awake, stay alert,” the RJD warned supporters, alleging that “outsider vote thieves, in collusion with anti-Bihar forces, are conspiring to steal the people’s mandate from the birthplace of democracy.”
The controversy follows an earlier incident on Saturday, when bundles of WPAT slips were discovered scattered along a road in the Sarairanjan Assembly segment of Samastipur. The Election Commission promptly suspended the Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) involved. Officials later clarified that the slips originated from a mock poll exercise and did not affect the integrity of the actual voting process.
Voting in Samastipur was conducted on November 6, during the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections. Today marks the final day of campaigning for 122 Assembly constituencies, with electioneering scheduled to end at 5 p.m. Polling for the next phase will take place on November 11, and results will be declared on November 14.
