Indian Navy Tightens Coastal Surveillance as Chinese Presence Expands Near Sri Lanka

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Navy has intensified its surveillance along the country’s coastline amid the growing presence and activities of Chinese vessels in the region, Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena has stated. He noted that China is steadily expanding its footprint near the Sri Lankan coast, a development India continues to monitor closely. Despite evolving global security dynamics, the Indian Navy remains fully prepared to meet any challenge, he affirmed.

As part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Navy is strengthening its efforts to achieve greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing, including indigenous warship construction. Vice Admiral Saxena also emphasised that the Navy is working in close coordination with state governments and other defence forces to enhance coastal security frameworks.

Referring to the recent sinking of the cargo vessel ELSA–3, he said the Navy responded swiftly and effectively, playing a crucial role in the rescue operations.

Theatre Command for Thiruvananthapuram Under Consideration

The proposal to establish a Theatre Command in Thiruvananthapuram is currently under the consideration of the Central Government, Vice Admiral Saxena said. The final decision rests with the Ministry of Defence, he added.

Thiruvananthapuram Gears Up for Navy Day Celebrations

In connection with Navy Day celebrations, an impressive display of India’s maritime strength will take place at Shankhumukham Beach on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the event. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar, and Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena will be in attendance.

The showcase will feature the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, along with several frontline warships and naval assets. This is the first time that Thiruvananthapuram is hosting the Navy Day celebrations. Special viewing arrangements have been set up at Vettucaud Beach for the public. Cultural programmes will also form part of the festivities.

Although Navy Day is observed on December 4, the main demonstrations were rescheduled to December 3 due to adjustments in the President’s official itinerary.

Warships and Aircraft Arrive Off the Coast

A formidable fleet—including MiG-29 fighter aircraft, INS ImphalINS KolkataINS Trishul, and INS Talwar—has already arrived off the Thiruvananthapuram coast. Sail-training ships such as INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini will also participate. The display will feature Chetak helicopters and Hawk fighter trainer aircraft as well.

In total, 19 warships, one submarine, and 32 aircraft will participate in the Navy’s operational demonstration, Vice Admiral Saxena announced at the press conference.
