Tributes continue to flow for 21-year-old Paul Fitzpatrick of Killenane Lane, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, who died in a tragic accidental shooting near Leighlinbridge late on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. while Mr. Fitzpatrick was out fox-hunting with friends.
His remains were taken to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. Gardaí subsequently cordoned off the area to facilitate a full forensic and technical investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mr. Fitzpatrick’s funeral will be held on Monday at St Andrew’s Church, Bagenalstown, followed by burial at Wells Cemetery, Royal Oak.
Paul is survived by his parents, Darran and Rosemarie, his brothers Billy and Niall, his girlfriend Ebony, grandparents Carmel, Mary and Paddy, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and “many, many friends and neighbours,” according to the funeral notice. He was predeceased by his grandfather Dick and his uncle Richard.
His family said he would be “eternally missed.”
Condolences have been shared widely online. One message read:
“Our sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Rosemarie, Darran, Billy, Niall, Ebony, and the extended Fitzpatrick and Nolan families. Paul was a wonderful young man—we enjoyed many great days watching him, his brothers, and Daniel playing school rugby. The Light of Heaven to you, Paul, and may God comfort your family.”
Another tribute added:
“Paul was such a lovely guy, always in good form whenever we met. I will always hold fond memories of him. Keeping you all in our thoughts during this difficult time.”
In a statement issued last week, gardaí confirmed that a man had been fatally injured during the incident and that investigations are ongoing.
