Indore (Madhya Pradesh): At least eight people have died and more than 100 others have been hospitalised in Indore after allegedly consuming contaminated drinking water supplied in the Bhagirathpura area of the city.
The deaths were reported between December 25 and 30, triggering serious concerns over water safety and civic negligence.
The health crisis began on December 25, when residents complained of an unusual taste and smell in the municipal water supply. Soon after, several people fell ill with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, and weakness. As the number of cases mounted, hospitals in the city reported a surge in patients from the affected locality.
Following the incident, the Indore Municipal Corporation suspended Zonal In-Charge Shaligram Sitole and Assistant Engineer Yogesh Joshi. Public Health Engineering (PHE) In-Charge Subnaitri Shubham Srivastava was also relieved of his duties.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased. He also said the state government would bear the full cost of medical treatment for those affected.
Residents alleged that the contamination occurred after consuming Narmada river water supplied through municipal taps. Several said the water tasted “bitter” over the past few days, raising suspicion that excess purification chemicals or other contaminants may have entered the supply.
Among the deceased were Nandlal Pal (80), who died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital, Seema Prajapat (50), who died on the way to hospital, and Urmila Yadav (70), who passed away during treatment on December 28, family members said.
Municipal authorities said an inspection revealed a leakage in the main water supply pipeline in Bhagirathpura, at a location where a toilet had been constructed over the line. Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav confirmed that repair work was underway.
“We found a leakage in the main water supply pipeline at a place in Bhagirathpura, over which a toilet has been constructed. Repairs are being carried out,” he said.
