Bengaluru: The man who died after jumping in front of a moving Namma Metro train at Kengeri station early Friday morning has been identified. The deceased has been confirmed as Shantagouda Police Patil (38), a resident of Vijayapura district. The incident brought services on the Purple Line to a complete halt.
The tragedy took place around 8:15 a.m., when the train was entering Kengeri station. Despite the alert security personnel immediately disconnecting power to the third rail, the victim was found trapped between the track and the train.
Services Disrupted; Investigation Underway
Following the incident, Namma Metro announced on X (formerly Twitter) that services between Mysuru Road and Challaghatta had been suspended temporarily. Authorities said that normal operations would resume only after safety inspections and clearance.
As the disruption occurred during peak hours, thousands of commuters from West Bengaluru—including Kengeri, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and Vijayanagar—were severely affected. Many were forced to depend on BMTC buses, leading to heavy overcrowding across several routes.
Kengeri Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body from the tracks, and shifted it to Rajarajeshwari Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials confirmed that a detailed investigation is in progress to determine the motive behind the suicide.
BMRCL has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to commuters.
