Veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passed away on Friday in Latur, Maharashtra. He was 91. Patil, who had been undergoing treatment at his residence in Deoghar, Latur due to prolonged illness, breathed his last around 6:30 a.m.
Shivraj Patil Chakurkar served the nation in several key capacities, including as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and in multiple Union Cabinet roles. He held the crucial post of Union Home Minister during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, after which he stepped down taking moral responsibility for the incident. Throughout his political career, Patil remained deeply committed to upholding constitutional values and played an active role in India’s governance.

Hailing from Chakur in Latur, Patil was a towering figure in the politics of Marathwada and Maharashtra. A senior Congress stalwart with strong grassroots influence, he was elected seven times from the Latur Lok Sabha constituency. Although he lost the seat in 2004, he continued to hold significant positions in national politics, including a Rajya Sabha membership and key ministerial responsibilities.
